Michael Epp

For Michael Epp, volunteering at the Friendship Inn is more than just serving meals—it’s about dignity, kindness, and human connection.

Michael, an Accountant at MNP in Saskatoon, has been volunteering at the Inn for three years, drawn to its mission of ensuring that everyone, especially those in vulnerable positions, has access to a warm meal. “I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and have their most basic human needs met,” he says. “That starts with having enough food to eat.”

One moment that deeply resonated with Michael came after a breakfast service. As he was finishing up his shift, a guest at the Inn approached him. “She told me, ‘Thank you for treating me and the other guests with kindness and dignity. The majority of people avoid interacting with us at all costs when they see us coming, but the staff and volunteers at the Friendship Inn always welcome us with open arms.” It was a powerful reminder that while food nourishes the body, respect and compassion nourish the soul.

For Michael, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the impact he can see with every meal served. “Being part of meal service at the Inn allows you to see firsthand the difference you are making for the guests,” he shares. But beyond that, his time at the Inn has changed his own perspective. “It’s easy to take life as we know it for granted, but volunteering here has taught me to be grateful for the opportunities I have and to use them to benefit those who aren’t as fortunate.”

Through his ongoing commitment, Michael continues to bring kindness and dignity to those who need it most—one meal, one conversation, and one act of compassion at a time.

Helping hands make every meal happen here at the Inn. Whether you’re helping with food prep or delivering meal trays, we rely on great people for volunteer power.
