At the Friendship Inn we love to partner with students. Students of all ages are invited to volunteer at the Friendship Inn as part of their learning experiences. By participating in the daily routine, they get a glimpse into the community that exists at the Inn.
For health and safety, the dress code for volunteering is: no open toed shoes, no sleeveless shirts, no short shorts. When you arrive we will provide you with the apron, gloves and hairnet that is needed.
Christian Ethics Students
We are grateful for the partnership with the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools who refer high school students to the Friendship Inn to complete their Service Hours for the Christian Ethics class. We require students to complete a volunteer application prior to their shift, as well as a signed Parental Consent Form. As our volunteer shifts fill up quickly, please plan ahead and schedule your shift 2-3 weeks in advance. Weekend shifts for Christian Ethics students are 5 hour shifts: on Saturday and Sunday, either from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm or 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Call 306-242-5122 (office hours Mon-Fri 7am-3pm) or email firstname.lastname@example.org to book a shift – shifts are limited. Parents: we encourage students to make the phone call or e-mail to set up their own shift. Tip from the Volunteer Coordinator: Please do not leave this until the very end of the school year, as we may not be able to accomodate you.
Our volunteer coordinator will no longer be accepting bookings from parents. High school students are expected to be able to call and book in themselves.
Class field trips to the Friendship Inn
We love to have students come to volunteer the Inn as a group. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule your visit. The typical class experience is a small group of students (8-10) along with teacher or parent chaperons volunteering during our lunch service from 11:30-2:00. We will accept full classes to volunteer together, the typical time frame for classrooms to come volunteer is from 11:00-1:30. Jobs that students will participate in are serving food, clearing tables, helping with dishes and cleaning. For children under Grade 6, we usually plan a craft activity.
Work Placement Students
Some work placement students assist as volunteers at the Friendship Inn. Advisers are invited to contact the Volunteer Coordinator to inquire if there is space available for the time period required.
University Practicum Students
Students or their advisers can inquire with our Family Worker about practicum positions at the Friendship Inn. Call 306-242-5122 for more details. Spaces are limited.
Volunteer Hours for class requirements
High school and university students who need a limited amount of hours to fulfill a class requirement are invited to volunteer at the Friendship Inn. Instructors who are assigning volunteer hours are encouraged to contact the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss the student learning opportunities. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to drop off your application and/or book your first shift. All students are required to complete the appropriate volunteer application. Regardless if it is for school or not, adults (18+) still require a criminal record check to volunteer at the Inn.
