Fine Option Program

The Friendship Inn partners with the John Howard Society to provide an opportunity to work off fines and complete community service. If you received a traffic ticket and would like to work it off at the Friendship Inn, follow the instructions on your ticket to get your Notice of Fine from the court and take it to the John Howard Society to register. You must go through John Howard Society before you come to the Inn.

Full Rules and Guidelines:

These will be provided for you either at John Howard after you sign up, or at the Inn on your first day, as a contract you sign. It is to your benefit to read them before you show up your first day.

Available hours are 7:00am until 3:00pm. Morning is our busiest time, and arriving at 7:00am should ensure you a shift for that day. Shifts are ‘first come, first in’ basis with a max. of 10 people per day.

Please enter through the side kitchen door and immediately report to the Fine Options Manager. On week days, the Fine Options Manager and sign in books is upstairs, while on weekends, the Fine Options Manager and sign in book is in the kitchen.

Only sign in/out at the hour or half hour (no quarters). Start times will be rounded up to the nearest half hour and end times will be rounded back to the nearest half hour (so get here a few min. before you want to sign in).

In order for your hours to be counted, you MUST sign in and out with the time and a staff initial.

Please keep track of your own hours and deadline; if you work on a day past your deadline you won’t be credited the hours. You can ask the Fine Option manager to check how many hours you have left.

Lunch is provided at 11:00-11:30 am daily, the ½ hour lunch break IS NOT counted towards hours worked. This means if you worked a full day from 7:00am-3:00 it would be 7.5 hours.  There are 2 fifteen minute breaks during the day.

No food or other goods are to be given away to staff, volunteers, or fine-option workers. All food and other items donated to the Inn are property of the Inn, and taking these items will be treated as theft.

As in any job, all people at the Friendship Inn – staff, fine option workers, volunteers – need to be treated with respect and dignity. Any kind of abuse (verbal, mental, physical, or spiritual), swearing, racial remarks, jokes, or other inappropriate behavior will NOT be tolerated. Anyone not following this policy will be asked to leave. If a participant is suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they will be immediately dismissed. Criminal activities will not be tolerated.

Friendship Inn has a dress code in accordance with health and safety guidelines. The following cannot be worn: shorts, tank tops, muscle shirts, open toed shoes. Long pants must be worn.  The use of cell phones or headphones are not permitted while working.  Aprons, gloves, and hairnets are supplied and must be worn at all times. Hats may be worn over the hairnets.

You are expected to carry out tasks assigned by the Friendship Inn staff.  If you have any questions about your work please check with the Fine Options Manager on duty.

You may use the courtesy phone in the dining room during your breaks. The phone in the kitchen is staff only.

Personal belongings are to be stored in the lockers provided, not the kitchen – the Kitchen Manager has the key. Friendship Inn is not responsible for any lost or missing personal items.

Parking is available on Avenues F and G.  Bikes must be left locked outside. No child care services are offered, please make other arrangements.
